How to Choose a Two-Post Car Lift
A two-post lift should be selected around the vehicles’ approved lifting points and the bay—not around capacity alone. The most important comparison fields are arm geometry, installation width and height, pad height, drive-through clearance, power requirements, and the accessories approved for your vehicle mix.
Symmetric and asymmetric positioning
In a symmetric arrangement, the vehicle is generally centered more evenly between the posts and the front and rear arms often have similar reach patterns. In an asymmetric arrangement, the posts or arms are configured to position more of the vehicle behind the columns, which can improve door access for many passenger vehicles.
These labels do not decide fit by themselves. Long trucks, short cars, wide EV lifting points, vans, and low vehicles can challenge any simple category. Compare the actual arm-reach diagrams and approved spotting instructions.
Overhead versus floorplate
An overhead model connects the columns above the vehicle. This can keep the floor between the posts clearer, but it introduces an upper structure and height limit that must clear the vehicle and building.
A floorplate model routes the connection across the floor. It can suit lower ceilings, but the plate changes how tools, transmissions, jacks, carts, and technicians move through the bay. Confirm the ramp-over height and intended workflow.
Arm reach and pad height
The arms must reach the approved points without improvised positioning. Review minimum and maximum arm reach, sweep, restraint design, pad height, and available adapters. Low vehicles can need a lower collapsed pad height; pickups or framed vehicles may need approved height adapters.
For EVs and other vehicles with wide outer lifting points, arm reach and underbody access can matter as much as total capacity.
Installation dimensions that matter
- Overall and adjustable column width
- Drive-through clearance
- Overall and overhead height
- Inside column clearance and door-opening room
- Power-unit and control-side location
- Approach distance and garage-door position
- Slab requirements and anchor clearances in the manual
Questions for a mixed-vehicle shop
- Can the shortest and longest wheelbases both be spotted correctly?
- Can the arms reach the pickup points of low cars, SUVs, pickups, and EVs?
- Are the needed adapters approved and included, or optional?
- Does the heaviest axle stay within the applicable component limits?
- Can vehicle doors open without contacting the posts?
- Will the tallest vehicle clear the overhead structure and building?
